Project Title:

Atlantic Salmon & Brook Trout Monitoring in North East PEI

Project Summary:

This project aimed to gain a better understanding of diadromous fish populations within our management area to help guide future conservation efforts.

We monitored the return of Atlantic Salmon and Brook Trout through redd surveys and a fyke net recording time of return, condition of the fish and preferred breeding locations.

We conducted redd surveys in our seven Atlantic Salmon streams: North Lake Creek, Priest Pond Creek, Cross River, Bear River, Hay River, Cow River and Naufrage Creek. Conditions were fairly good for the redd surveys, though there was some heavy rain events that prevented surveying of the streams at critical spawning times.

System Atlantic Salmon redds Brook Trout redds North Lake 76 93 Priest Pond 5 10

Cross River 115 50

Hay River 0 15

Bear River 11 29

Naufrage River 38 33

Cow River 3 4

Total 250 234

We installed a fyke net in Hay River to record returning fish as part of a larger, extensive monitoring project within the system.
